5 Smart Reasons to Buy A Watch Pre-Owned

Breitling Navitimer World GMT Steel Blue Dial Strap Watch

Buying a brand new, straight out-of-the-box luxury watch can be exhilarating. But it seems that more people are discovering the joys of buying pre-owned and vintage watches as the market has exploded in the last decade.

Now that you have your sights set on a particular watch, should you consider buying a pre-owned version? You bet. SwissWatchExpo gives you 5 compelling reasons why:

You avoid the initial depreciation of a brand new watch.

Buying a luxury watch is a lot like purchasing a car. Its value depreciates immediately after you drive it off from the dealership or when it moves from “new” to “pre-owned”.

Unlike cars however, a pre-owned luxury watch can still be used after decades, and has a “glass floor” or a value by which it will no longer sink. By buying a watch that’s already pre-owned, you avoid taking this initial depreciation, thus making it a financially wiser choice.

You’re more likely to sell it at the same value, or for a profit.

We don’t recommend buying a watch for the sole purpose of making it an investment – that is, buying it only to sell it later for a profit – as it’s not guaranteed that their price will appreciate later on.

But should you want to sell your watch again after a few years, you’re less likely to suffer a loss with a pre-owned watch, because the original owner already ate the initial loss in value.

You get to choose from a wide range of models and price points.

Buying brand new limits you to current models, whereas the pre-owned market can give you a vast array of models, including previous versions of watches, limited editions, discontinued styles. This is especially true for luxury watch staples or designs that are considered classic.

Rolex watches, for example, only evolve and experience changes that are so minute over decades. If you want a Rolex Submariner for example, you can choose from models from different decades, until you find one that is within your budget.

You can buy them in “never worn” or excellent condition.

If you still prefer your watch as new as possible, there’s a solution for that – there are watches in the pre-owned market that have never been worn or just worn slightly and still look like new.

They’re more common than you think! It could be that the previous owner got it from an authorized dealer and decided shortly after that it wasn’t for them, or that it was just kept in a deposit box.

If you prefer these, ask for them specifically from your chosen watch retailer. Many of SwissWatchExpo’s clients ask for unworn watches, and we provide the watch if it’s in stock, or add it to our Request List.

Buying pre-owned can be more convenient.

While e-commerce has made shopping more convenient, you still won’t be able to buy brand new Rolex, Omega, Cartier, Patek Philippe, and most luxury watch brands online.

But, most pre-owned watch retailers are online, and you can search their collection at your own pace.

SwissWatchExpo, in particular, posts the pictures of the actual watch that’s being sold, so you can see exactly what you’re getting.

Moreover, if you choose the right retailer, you will get your watch safe and sound, without ever having to step out of your home.
