Watch Spotting on Netflix: Narcos, House of Cards, and More
The global pandemic and Shelter in Place orders have given everyone a chance to binge on their favorite shows – us included! While watching old favorites and catching up on this year’s releases, we also spent some time wristwatch hunting on screen.
Product placement aside, choosing a particular wrist watch for a character tells us a considerable amount about their nature. Check out the watches we’ve spotted on our Netflix marathon:
Rolex Explorer I in Mad Men
We see Jon Hamm’s character, Don Draper, wear several different watches on the advertising drama, Mad Men. The brilliant adman has refined taste; and it sure showed in his wardrobe and choice watches. In Season 4, we saw him wear an Explorer I — Rolex’s most classically designed sport watch.
Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso in Mad Men
In Season 2, we see Draper wearing a Jaeger LeCoultre Reverso Classique. The rectangular dress watch has been in production since 1931, originally as a watch for polo players, but its classic Art Deco style goes very well with tailored and formal looks.
Rolex Oyster Perpetual in Marriage Story
In the 2019 drama comedy Marriage Story, Adam Driver stars alongside Scarlett Johansson to portray a New York couple in the process of a bitter divorce and custody battle. We see Driver’s character wear a Rolex Oyster Perpetual 39 mm watch in many scenes.
Tag Heuer Monaco Chronograph in Breaking Bad
While Breaking Bad ended in 2013, it’s still a favorite among many for its unusual plot. Bryan Cranston plays Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher who starts cooking crystal meth to pay for his terminal lung cancer treatment. As demand for his product grew, he was gifted by partner-in-crime Jessie (played by Aaron Paul) with a Tag Heuer Monaco.
The watch has been so closely associated with the series, which ran for five seasons. While the blue dial Monaco is recognized for being the first automatic square chronograph and racing legend Steve McQueen’s movie watch, many also refer to the blue dial chronograph as the Walter White Monaco.
Cartier Tank Classic in House of Cards
American political thriller House of Cards has been running since 2013; and had to write off the show’s lead actor in the wake of abuse allegations. This doesn’t mean the show was toppled, however!
Robin Wright’s character, Claire Underwood, became the new lead of the show, playing the first ever female US president. With all eyes on her this time, we were able to spot Cartier Tank Classic models in yellow gold – one with a brown strap and another with a black leather strap.
Cartier Tank Francaise in House of Cards
Loyal to Cartier, the polished and stylish Underwood was also spotted wearing steel and diamond Cartier Tank Francaise. A modern take on the classic Tank watch, the Tank Francaise comes with a chain link bracelet and more angular rectangle case.
Rolex Cellini Vintage in Narcos
Narcos is a crime drama that chronicles the life and exploits of infamous drug kingpin, Pablo Escobar. While the billionaire drug lord wore a full diamond pavé Rolex in real life, actor Wagner Moura sported a more understated timepiece – a Rolex Cellini Vintage gold model. It’s not ostentatious by any means, but is a correct match for the era.
