New Rolex Oyster Perpetual Lineup

2020 rolex oyster perpetual

The Rolex Oyster Perpetual is the quintessential Rolex. Without complications or embellishments, it still has everything that makes a Rolex a Rolex: the waterproof case that is the Oyster and the perpetually winding rotor inside. From the get go, the Rolex Oyster Perpetual has been a symbol of classic style.

In 2020, Rolex breathed fresh air into the Oyster Perpetual collection with a new size, vibrant colors, and 14 new models. Suddenly, the slightly under the radar timepiece set the watch world abuzz.

Here’s a breakdown of the new Rolex Oyster Perpetual models.

LARGER SIZE, NEW BRACELET

The current crop of Rolex Oyster Perpetual watches come in five sizes. As has been the case for some time, there are 36, 34, 31, and 28mm sizes in the collection. This time, the OP 39 was discontinued to make way for the new 41mm version. Aside from this new size, all the models come with a fully-brushed Oystersteel bracelet, equipped with the Easylink extension system. This allows the wearer to adjust the bracelet by 5mm increments without the use of tools.

SUBTLE DIAL DESIGN DIFFERENCES

A closer look will also reveal subtle differences in the dial design. The OP 36 and OP 41 are mirror versions of each other, while the 34, 31, and 28mm come with minute details unique to their size.

OP 41 / 36 – these come with double baton markers on the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions and painted squares beside every hour marker

OP 34 – these come with thicker baton markers on the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions and Roman numerals beside every hour marker

OP 31 – similar to the OP34, but with bold hashmarks at every hour marker instead of Roman numerals

OP 28 – with single baton hour markers and no hashmarks beside them. It also comes with two coronets flanking the words Swiss Made at 6 o’clock – a reference to vintage models where Tritium was indicated.

With this refresh, all Oyster Perpetual models regardless of size were also given the Chromalight lume, with longer-lasting blue glow.

SUNRAY VS LACQUERED DIALS

The most talked about aspect of the Rolex Oyster Perpetual lineup are the color options available. Beyond its sheer variety, what is particularly interesting are the new colors presented, which are plenty bright and lacquered – a first for the most discreet Rolex one can wear.

SUNRAY DIALS

The lineup has three basic dial colors in a sunray finish: black, blue, and silver – the last of which comes with complementing gold surrounds on the baton markers. These colors are available across all sizes. Meanwhile, the 34, 31, and 28mm sizes all have a sunray dial in a rose pink hue.

LACQUERED DIALS

The unexpected and delightful surprise for this refresh came in the form of bright, lacquered dials. Reminiscent of the Rolex Day-Date‘s Stella dials from the 1970s, the colors range from bright pastels to bold colors.

We’re talking deep yellow, coral red, forest green, and turquiose blue available in the 41, 36, and 31mm versions of the Oyster Perpetual. Meanwhile, there’s a candy pink lacquered dial exclusive to the 36 and 31mm sizes.

The dial types and colors overlap within the sizes, which we have simplified on the table below.

MOVEMENTS

As with the dials, the new Oyster Perpetual line falls into two buckets when it comes to movements.

The 36 and 41mm sizes are powered by the new in-house Rolex caliber 3230. Complete with the anti-magnetic Parachrom balance spring and Chronergy escapement, it boasts of a 70-hour power reserve. This is the same movement used by the new non-date Rolex Submariner.

Meanwhile, the 34, 31 ,and 28mm models run using the in-house Rolex caliber 2232. Equipped with the Syloxi hairspring in silicon, it provides greater stability in the face of temperature variations and shocks.
