Tudor Black Bay Chronograph Buying Guide

Tudor Black Bay Chrono

Tudor’s successful rebranding was largely built on the Heritage Black Bay collection. Introduced in 2012, it solidified the brand’s entry into a new era – one that is separate from its famous sister company Rolex, but also one that is proud of its heritage.

As Tudor’s most diverse and popular offering, the Heritage Black Bay takes inspiration from the brand’s iconic vintage dive watch designs, while incorporating modern technology and contemporary aesthetics.

Today, the series has crossed over into making complicated watches, while still being faithful to Black Bay’s original design language. From releasing simple, three-hand models during the first few years, Tudor has expanded the collection to include high-performing chronographs, with several editions on offer.

Here are the chronograph models available in the Tudor Black Bay collection:

Tudor Black Bay Chrono

The pioneer Tudor Black Bay Chrono, which was introduced at Baselworld 2017, is a timeless expression of the chronograph watch. This watch is recognizable for its distinct features: the hefty steel casing, the knurled pushers and sturdy screw-down crown on the right, and the superbly executed black dial with a soft granular texture, all inspired by Tudor’s vintage divers and chronographs.

Generously sized at 41mm, the watch wears well on the wrist with its sculpted link bracelet and smooth flip-lock clasp. Ruggedness is well-expressed through the fixed tachymeter bezel with engraved black markings, while the luminous geometric indices and the signature snowflake hand offer increased legibility.

Tudor Black Bay Chrono S&G

Next, we have the Tudor Black Bay Chrono S&G, which puts an elegant twist to the average tool watch. Launched at the 2019 Baselworld, it appeals to two-tone watch lovers with its steel and gold construction.

The Black Bay Chrono S&G pairs a matte black dial with a combination of polished and satin finishes, while gold details on the crown and pushers, chronograph subdials, bezel and center links balance out its rugged charm. The snowflake hands and the hour markers were also given a fancy treatment by boasting gold surrounds.

Available with a choice of a two-tone metal bracelet, a vintage leather strap, and a jacquard fabric band, this watch offers a lot of styling options. The 200-meter water resistance and the Caliber MT5813 that runs inside make it highly reliable.

Tudor Black Bay Chrono Dark

Also in 2019, Tudor released the Black Bay Chrono Dark, crafted in collaboration with New Zealand’s national rugby team, the All Blacks. A brooding and a much more masculine take on the classic Black Bay Chrono, it is a limited edition watch, whose number will increase over time, as its production corresponds to the number of All Blacks players since 1903.

Yet again, the Black Bay Chrono Dark features a brushed stainless steel case, but with a matte black PVD treatment that adds edge and sharpness to the watch. Tudor also incorporated the same high contrast aesthetic to the solid caseback, equipped with engravings that detail its functionalities.

Much like the previous models, its dial comes in black and has red accents on the signature and the tip of the second hand. The domed sapphire crystal offers great protection against scratches, while its 200-meter depth rating makes it appropriate for both diving and racing.

Tudor Black Bay Chrono Panda

The latest addition to the Black Bay Chrono family is the Panda, unveiled in early 2021. This handsome chronograph is a modern-day homage to the famous Rolex “Paul Newman” Daytona.

Boasting a utilitarian feel, it combines polished and brushed finishes on the case and bracelet, and is furnished with either an opaline Panda or black Reverse Panda dial with contrasting sub-registers, and a sunken date window at 6 o’clock.

Much like the previous models, it remains true to the Black Bay’s design DNA with its Snowflake hands and beveled edges. However, its case  – although still chunky  – has been refined and slimmed down to about 14.4mm to accommodate those with smaller wrists.
