Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight : Silver, Bronze and Gold

When the Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight was introduced in 2018, watch fans leaped for joy due to its retro feel and versatile look. With a 39mm case size and a thickness of 12mm, its whittled-down dimensions are just right for the average wrist while letting wearers enjoy the vintage aesthetic of the classic Black Bay.

Encouraged by the BB58’s success, Tudor has introduced several new editions since then. While the first two models from the collection were made of stainless steel, 2021 saw the brand making unconventional choices, with models in yellow gold, bronze, and sterling silver. Here is a simplified guide to the newest members of the Black Bay Fifty-Eight series:

Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925 Silver

Introduced in 2021, the Black Bay Fifty-Eight 925 is a unique take on the classic Black Bay. Instead of the more common 316L stainless steel used for dive watches, this watch is made of 925 sterling silver, an alloy of 92.5% silver, and 7.5% other metals (such as copper).

Silver has been used for watches many decades ago but it has gone out of fashion due to it being prone to tarnishing. This soft alloy also sits somewhere in the middle – more expensive than steel and yet not as luxurious as white gold or platinum – but Tudor takes the risk anyway to demonstrate their commitment to innovation.

Boasting an edgy look, the Fifty-Eight 925 took the 39mm case size of the classic BB58 but is slightly thicker at 12.7mm due to the sapphire caseback. Its color is warmer than steel, while its brushed finish exudes an industrial appeal. A fabric strap and leather bracelet were also made available, which both allow for a comfortable fit on the wrist.

Thanks to its COSC-certified MT5400 automatic movement with a hacking, hand-winding, and no phantom date position, this watch is extremely accurate. The dial and bezel with a charcoal-purplish color also complement the watch’s monochromatic finish.

Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight Gold

Released alongside the silver version, the yellow gold Black Bay Fifty-Eight is Tudor’s first solid gold dive watch. While divers done in this material are no longer unorthodox (e.g. Rolex Submariner’s yellow gold), this one differentiates itself in several ways such as having a satin-finished 18-carat yellow gold construction, with hour hands and applied indices in solid gold to match.

Additionally, the watch features an earthy green dial and bezel with yellow undertones that complement the metal, especially under exposure to light. The warm and terrestrial coloring has the effect of making this piece look as though it’s made from bronze.

Much like its silver sibling, the 9018V-0001 comes with a choice of either fabric or an alligator strap with matching gold hardware. Tudor also retained the exhibition caseback, which shows off the MT5400 movement at work.

Tudor Black Bay Fifty-Eight Bronze

Following the silver and gold renditions is a Black Bay Fifty-Eight in bronze. This piece offers the common but sturdy metal in a well-loved 39mm size. It also makes use of the same aluminum-bronze alloy found in the original Black Bay, which guarantees the development of a subtle and homogenous patina to match its wearer’s habits.

Boasting a charismatic look, its dial and bezel are in a warm tone Tudor refers to as “bronze-brown.” The dial is also slightly different from that of other Fifty-Eights, with Arabic numerals in place of bar indices at 3, 6, and 9. Powering the watch is the Caliber MT5400, which provides a 70-hour power reserve.

Its bronze bracelet features a newly-developed micro-adjustment clasp for easy sizing on the fly even without the use of a tool, while a combination of sliding and folding motions can be used to shorten and lengthen the strap as needed in warmer or cooler seasons. Tudor also added an option of a brown bronze-colored band for a more casual look.
