5 Best Steel Luxury Sports Watches

The ebb and flow of trends in the luxury watch world constantly change, but there is one perennial favorite: the steel sports watch. They can take a beating and can be dressed up or dressed down. They make a statement in a subtle way. It’s almost a rite of passage to own one.

The demand for steel luxury sports watches is a good indication. Today, it’s virtually impossible to walk into an authorized dealer to get one. Thankfully, we have them here at SwissWatchExpo – and with the holiday season in full swing, there’s no better time to secure your very own timepiece.

We’ve come up with our list of five of the best steel luxury sports watches ever. Did our picks make it into yours?

Rolex Submariner

Why we love it: It set the standard for diver’s watches, and pretty much owns the category today.

The word “timeless” is frequently used in the horology realm, and if there is one watch that genuinely deserves to be termed such, it is the Submariner. It has been a workhorse of the Swiss watch industry, with modern models remaining loyal to the original Sub first introduced in 1953.

Its recognizable design remains even through many incremental changes – its last update included a slew of dial updates and bracelet changes, a slightly enlarged 41mm case for the first time in 32 years, and the new Caliber 3235 with a Chronergy escapement and 70-hour power reserve under its hood. Even as it approaches its 70th anniversary next year, the Submariner continues to be a watch to aspire for.

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

Why we love it: It’s the OG steel luxury sports watch.

In order to compete with more accurate quartz timepieces, Audemars Piguet commissioned famous watch designer Gerald Genta to build a unique and ingenious timepiece. The Royal Oak, first introduced in 1972, is an enduring masterpiece with its iconic octagonal bezel attached to a tonneau-shaped case, “Tapisserie” dial, and integrated steel band. Many have attempted to imitate it, but none have succeeded.

It holds the record for being the first true sports luxury watch, and it not only revolutionized the landscape of modern horology, but its design served as a prototype for future sports watches. The Royal Oak, which has a cult-like following, is now being produced in a modern 41mm case size, but with the nostalgia for older timepieces, even the smaller 37 and 39mm models with retro detailing remain in vogue.

Patek Philippe Nautilus

Why we love it: It brought the hard-wearing stainless steel into the realm of luxury.

Gerald Genta and Patek Philippe took chances with the Nautilus when it debuted in 1976, and it paid off handsomely. It has a distinctive shape that is inspired by a ship’s porthole, with a rounded octagonal bezel and case “ears” for a hinge on one side and a closing on the other. Horizontal grooves on the dial and the integrated bracelet added to its character.

To craft the case of the Nautilus, a unique alloy known as nickel-chrome-molybdenum steel was utilized. This material is lightweight but durable and is mostly utilized in combat tanks due to its capacity to withstand pressure and temperature differences. Marketing-wise, Patek also made a bold move – it was advertised as one of the world’s most expensive stainless steel watches, increasing collectors’ desire for the watch.

Today, the Nautilus (especially the ref. 5711) remains the most coveted luxury sports timepiece. Before the 5711 was discontinued, it had a waiting list of around ten years in authorized dealers and was selling for about double its retail price on the secondary market.

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona

Why we love it: It went from a humble tool watch to a sought-after luxury chronograph.

Everyone loves underdogs, and the Rolex Daytona is no exception. It wasn’t particularly well-liked when it first appeared in 1963 due to its bold dial defined by three contrasting sub-dials. In fact, that’s why Daytonas from the ‘60s to ‘70s are rare today – their early production numbers were really low. This watch was named after the famous Florida race track to help attract an American audience.

It wasn’t considered cool until Paul Newman, the famous actor, and race car driver wore one. Today, the Daytona is easily one of the most sought-after timepieces on the market, having preserved its tool watch attributes while also being a luxury watch.

There are three generations of the steel Daytona: the ref 16520 with the Zenith movement, the ref 116520 with the Caliber 4130, and the ref 116500 with the Cerachrom bezel. Each version is loved for its ruggedly handsome design and genuine ties to the racing world.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas

Why we love it: It’s the steel luxury watch made for the jet set.

The Overseas has grown since it first saw light as the ref. 222. It was created by Jorg Hysek in 1977 to commemorate VC’s 222nd anniversary and was meant to challenge Genta’s Royal Oak and Nautilus. A barrel-shaped case topped with a notched Maltese cross bezel, and a combination of eye-catching curves and angles define its design.

Another key feature of the Overseas is its interchangeable bracelet system, which allows for three different looks. Available with three attachments – stainless steel bracelet, and a crocodile and rubber strap, it is suitable for affairs that blend business with sport and pleasure.
