The Breitling Super Chronomat Four-Year Calendar

Breitling Super Chronomat Four Year Calendar Steel Watch I19320

In 1984, Breitling released the modern Chronomat off the heels of the chronograph they created for the Frecce Tricolori, Italy’s famous aerobatic flight team. Ripe for a period of heightened patriotism, air shows, and fascination with jet aircrafts (this was the Top Gun generation after all), Breitling had a hit on their hands. Through the rest of the 80s, until the 2000s, the Breitling Chronomat became an integral part of the brand’s catalog.

Breitling relaunched the collection in 2020 with contemporary styling, to introduce the Chronomat to a new generation of collectors. The first salvo included 32, 36, and 42mm models, but Breitling wasn’t done yet. The follow-up was a whopping 44mm Super Chronomat with an unusual complication, proving Breitling was still King when it comes to super-sized pilot’s watches.

Let’s explore the Breitling Super Chronomat Four-Year Calendar:

About the Breitling Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar

From its beginnings as a mathematical chronograph, the modern Breitling Chronomat was presented as an all-purpose sports watch. It has been a constant presence in the Breitling catalog since 1984, and in 2020, an all-new generation of the Chronomat was launched. Composed of 32, 36, and 42mm models, the contemporary Chronomat was quickly followed by the Super Chronomat 44mm chronograph.

The Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar is the most complicated watch in that launch. It comes in two variations – all stainless steel with a black bezel and dial; and two-tone steel and rose gold with a blue bezel and dial.

The Case and Dial

The casing of the Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar is 44mm wide and 14.5mm thick, with a shape much like the original Chronomat. Lug to lug, the watch measures 53.5mm. The feel is massive and solid, and heavy at 134.4 grams for the watch head alone. Moreover, the watch offers water resistance of up to 100 meters.

The bezel is fairly broad and big, with distinctive rider tabs at 12, 3, 6, and 9. At the top is a mirror-polished ceramic inlay that is marked at each hour with an etched line in a contrasting rose gold tone. Minute markings are also engraved on its upper half.

Like most complicated calendars, there’s a lot going on in terms of the watch’s dial design. It has appliqué markers filled with SuperLuminova and transfer printed minute marks around the rim. The sub-dials are positioned at 12, 6, and 9 o’clock with a moonphase window at 3 o’clock, while the sloping rehaut is marked up as a tachymeter.

The most daring of the Chronomat watches, the Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar features ceramic inserts on the bezel, chronograph pushers, and crown.

The Movement

Powering the Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar is the Caliber 19 – a COSC-certified movement that has been used in a number of Breitling models in the past and is based on the ETA 2892-A2. Its module offers a chronograph function and a calendar that only needs to be adjusted once per leap year, or every 1,461 days.

This movement, in particular, is halfway between the annual calendar and the perpetual calendar. The annual calendar requires a correction every year, but perpetual calendars are traditional complications that account for leap years. The Caliber 19 operates on a four-year cycle, recognizing leap years and progressing from February 29 to March 1 on its own, and from February 28 to March 1 on non-leap years without intervention.

Furthermore, the Caliber 19 comes with approximately 42 hours of power reserve and displays a 1/4th second chronograph, 30-minute, and 12-hour totalizer. The 4-year calendar also shows the day, date, month and moonphase.

Bracelet

Steel and steel-rose gold Super Chronomat 44 Four-Year Calendar models are available with either a rubber Rouleaux-inspired strap or a metal Rouleaux or “roller” bracelet. Both are made up of long, cylindrical links with rounded points that resemble tiny bullets and serve as a visual tie to the Frecce Tricolori as well as a link to Breitling’s military background.
