The watch was too expensive to produce and did not see mass production. Over the next two decades, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swisswatchexpo.com\/thewatchclub\/2019\/04\/12\/pros-and-cons-of-ceramic-in-watches\/\">ceramic watches<\/a> would be released by IWC and Chanel, finally going mainstream when Rolex launched the\u00a0<em><strong>Cerachrom<\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>in 2005.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&lt;br&gt;<\/span><br \/>\nThe use of ceramic has become more popular over the past decade, and Rolex being Rolex, they did not just settle for any ceramic. They patented their own ceramic material called the\u00a0<strong><em>Cerachrom<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0(\u201cchrom\u201d being the Greek word for color). The tough watch component is scratch-proof and virtually resistant to fading.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&lt;br&gt;<\/span><br \/>\nIt was first featured in the\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swisswatchexpo.com\/watches\/rolex\/gmtmaster\/\">GMT Master<\/a> II<\/strong>\u00a0of 2005, followed by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swisswatchexpo.com\/watches\/rolex\/submariner\/\"><strong>Submariner<\/strong><\/a>, and then\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swisswatchexpo.com\/watches\/rolex\/yachtmaster\/\"><strong>YachtMaster<\/strong><\/a>. Colors have eventually included blue, black and green, helping the use of ceramics become widespread.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0&lt;br&gt;<\/span><br \/>\nRolex had previously announced that creating a dual-color ceramic bezel would be impossible, but they ended up proving themselves wrong with the\u00a0<strong>GMT Master II 116710<\/strong>or more popularly known as the \u201cBatman\u201d (seen above).<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">\u00a0&lt;br&gt;<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3d71a1;\"><strong>PROS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Very strong, robust material that won\u2019t scratch<\/li>\n<li>Aesthetically appealing. In dual-color ceramic bezels, the two colors help the wearer distinguish between day and night. Not many people realize that it is the product of many decades of testing and improving \u2013 it wasn\u2019t until the 1970\u2019s that stainless steel watches became the norm.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&lt;br&gt;<\/span><br \/>\nThe extremely hard material was ideal for tool watches given its strength and waterproofness, but it was also very heavy \u2013 initially, it was used for diver, pilot, and military watches and taken off after work in exchange for a lighter gold watch.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&lt;br&gt;\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Audemars Piguet\u00a0<\/strong>made history by launching the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swisswatchexpo.com\/watches\/audemars-piguet\/royal-oak\/\"><strong>Royal Oak\u00a0<\/strong><\/a>as the first stainless steel watch 1972. While in the middle of a financial crisis, the company was on the lookout for a disruptive launch. With feedback of the Italian market\u2019s interest in steel watches, they tasked Gerald Genta, the most famous watch designer at the time, to be responsible for its design.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&lt;br&gt;\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\nToday, brands like\u00a0<strong>Rolex<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong>Audemars Piguet<\/strong>\u00a0put a lot of importance on using specific kinds and combinations of stainless steel to make high quality wristwatches.<br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">&lt;br&gt;\u00a0<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #3d71a1;\"><strong>PROS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No contrast between the watch case and the bezel, so the watch looks more streamlined<\/li>\n<li>Is robust and won\u2019t chip or shatter<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"color: #3d71a1;\"><strong>CONS<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Is susceptible to discoloration and scratching.
