It was the famous moon landing that propelled the Speedmaster to mainstream consciousness \u2013 but it was, first and foremost, a racing watch. In 1957, it debuted to serve the needs of motorsport enthusiasts as they pushed their race cars to the limit.<\/p>\n

While the MoonWatch is still front and center in the Speedmaster collection today, Omega has never forgotten the origins of the Speedy, and \u201cracing dials\u201d have always been present in the lineup. Omega Speedmaster Racing Dials Through the Years<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

Its history is a bit murky but the first Speedmaster with a “racing” dial is thought to have debuted in 1968. Omega created a few Speedmasters with unique hands, dials, and bezels that deviated from the standard Speedmaster formula (white hands, and black dial and bezel).<\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

These Racing dials have vivid, contrasting colors on the outer track, which is\u00a0intended to make the chronograph simpler to read at a glance.\u00a0Similarly, the hands are in a bright red-orange hue, and most examples seem to feature a running seconds hand of the same color. The running seconds counter and hands also appeared in white.<\/p>\n

We\u2019ll see several editions of these dials over the years, most notably the following:<\/p>\n

Ref. 145.012-67 Speedmaster \u2018Red Racing\u2019<\/strong> in 1968, which uses the Caliber 321 and features a dot-over-ninety bezel;<\/p>\n

Ref. 145.022 ‘Orange Racing’<\/strong> in 1968, which is characterized by orange paint on the outer track and orange chronograph seconds hand;<\/p>\n

Ref. 145.014 Speedmaster Professional Mark II<\/strong> in 1969, also known as the \u201cexotic\u201d dial variant, which was later reissued in 2014;<\/p>\n

Omega Speedmaster Racing Co-Axial<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

When Omega introduced George Daniels’s Co-Axial escapement, a number of racing-inspired Speedmasters followed. The first thing you’ll notice about the Speedmaster Racing, other than its striking watch face, is the size. It’s a very appropriate 40mm tribute to the past and appears even smaller because the bezel sits outside of the sapphire crystal. Moreover, its high-contrast dials have a distinct, expansive style characterized by a slimmed outer minute ring and two enlarged sub-dials.<\/p>\n

Omega Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

The current edition of the Speedmaster Racing, introduced in 2017, brought back the checkered watch face and featured an upgraded METAS-certified Master Chronometer movement. The Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer looks and feels much like every other Speedy except for its contemporary dimensions: it clocks in larger\u00a0at exactly 44.25mm wide, but sits comfortably on the wrist, thanks to a very reasonable sub-15mm height. There\u2019s also a sapphire crystal on both the front and back, allowing wearers to view the movement at work.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, the bezel takes advantage of Omega\u2019s Liquidmetal technology, which allows for the seamless integration of metallic scales and numerals into the ceramic. The Speedmaster\u00a0Racing Master Chronometer also uses a two-register design for the dial with a date window at 6. The brand achieves this by placing the chronograph minutes and seconds on the 3 o\u2019clock sub-dial, thus creating a clean look and improving overall readability. An ultra-luxe model was also added to the range in the form of a solid 18k Sedna gold edition.
