When it was first introduced, the Rolex Sea-Dweller<\/a> wasn’t as popular as it is today.\u00a0It was made for a very specific purpose\u00a0\u2013 to go deeper than the average dive watch and to be a reliable tool for dedicated saturation divers.<\/p>\n

But for this alone, it holds its own among greats like the Datejust<\/a>, Submariner<\/a>, and the Day-Date<\/a>; and with a new model released on\u00a0its 50th\u00a0<\/sup>year, it looks like it\u2019s going to be around for long, long time.

Here\u2019s a look at the Sea-Dweller\u2019<\/a>s beginnings and its most defining models:

While the the\u00a0Submariner, Rolex’s first dive watch,\u00a0could reach an impressive 200 meters \/\u00a0660 feet, a more technologically capable watch was needed for hardcore, saturation diving and staying underwater for extended periods of time.<\/p>\n

As saturation diving requires the use of helium with the breathing gas, helium particles tend to accumulate within the case of a diving watch, thereby blowing\u00a0the plexiglass off during decompression.\u00a0Rolex tried to solve this issue by testing prototypes that had helium escape valves \u2013 a way to safely depressurize the watch as it reaches sea level.<\/p>\n

These prototypes were called ‘Sea-Dwellers<\/a>‘, given the long periods they spend underwater. And so, the\u00a0Rolex Sea-Dweller<\/a>‘s story began in\u00a01967.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Key Models of the Sea-Dweller<\/a><\/strong><\/span>
\nThere have been many innovations and deeper depth ratings for the Sea-Dweller<\/a> in its 50 year existence. Here are the major ones, in 5 watches:

\nThe Great White keeps most of the features of the Double Red: same case, same water resistance \u2013 but this time, the two red lines have been changed to white.<\/div>\n

This trait aside, it\u2019s highly coveted by collectors because it was the last Sea-Dweller<\/a> to use the plexiglass crystal, which is a defining feature of a vintage watch.<\/div>\n

\nThis is considered by many to be the start of the \u201cmodern\u201d Sea-Dwellers<\/a>, mainly because it now features the sapphire crystal.<\/div>\n

\nTwo decades after, Rolex took the Sea-Dweller<\/a> to another level with the Deepsea, whose water resistance was tripled to 12,800 feet \/ 3,990 meters.<\/div>\n

The long wait led to a number of technical feats, including a 55mm thick sapphire crystal to support underwater pressure, a Ringlock system that manages the watch\u2019s thickness to 18mm, and of course, Rolex\u2019s new Cerachrom bezel and Chromalight lume.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n\n\n\n

\nA Sea-Dweller<\/a> fan would spot this model\u2019s difference immediately: the larger 43mm case and thicker 22mm lug size, and of course, the Cyclops lens over the date. It became the first Sea-Dweller<\/a> to feature the Cyclops; and it also paid homage to the very first prototypes, with its single red line.<\/div>\n
