One of the less discussed watch lines of Rolex, the Air-King<\/a> has been ticking since the 1940s and has largely remained the same, until its relaunch in 2016. Rolex Air-King<\/a>: A Pilot’s Watch<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n

It may be hard to believe today, but the clean and uncluttered Rolex Air-King<\/a> was first developed as a pilot’s watch.<\/p>\n

Launched in\u00a01945, the Rolex Air-King<\/a> was part of a collection of watches that Rolex made to\u00a0honor the RAF pilots of the Battle of Britain. The rest of the series\u00a0\u2013 Air-Lion, Air-Giant, and Air-Tiger \u2013 were phased out in the 1960s, but the Rolex Air-King<\/a> lived on.<\/p>\n

It is without the bells and whistles of today’s aviation watches, but pilots back then loved the uncluttered and easy to read design of the Rolex Air-King<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Since then, the\u00a0Rolex Air-King<\/a> has\u00a0been a time-only watch, and\u00a0measured 34mm. Its dial only had a mix of Arabic numerals and baton hour markers, plus some very discreet minute markers.<\/p>\n

Over the years, some design variations were introduced:\u00a0the engine turned bezel<\/a>,\u00a0\u00a0concentric dial, and roman numeral markers.<\/p>\n

The latest model from the pre-revival era, the\u00a01142XX series, introduced the new Oyster bracelet,\u00a018k white gold fluted bezel, and Calibre 3130 — all of which gave a more modern look and improved accuracy\u00a0to the Air-King<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Rolex Air-King<\/a> Redesigned<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Many watch fans did not anticipate the return of the Rolex Air-King<\/a> in 2016, and an\u00a0even bigger surprise came, when\u00a0it was revealed that it would look nothing like the previous Air-King<\/a> models.<\/p>\n

Rolex took a\u00a0two-year hiatus to revamp the Air-King,<\/a> with influences from its other lines: the Explorer and the\u00a0Milgauss.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

The new Rolex Air-King<\/a> ref 116900 now measures 40mm – the same case size as the brand’s most popular sport watches, namely\u00a0the Submariner, GMT-Master,\u00a0and the Daytona. The acrylic crystal was also replaced with synthetic sapphire, which is more robust.<\/p>\n

Moreover, gone were\u00a0the simple dial designs. They were\u00a0replaced by just one dial design, which had a\u00a0mix of various details.<\/p>\n

There are\u00a0the Arabic numerals put in\u00a0place of the baton hands;\u00a0the\u00a0Explorer-style 3-6-9 numbers\u00a0and inverted 12 o’clock marker, plus the brightly-colored Rolex logo and coronet. Rolex retained the Air-King<\/a> font, but this time, placed it above 6 o’clock.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

This design isn’t entirely new, however. What inspired the\u00a0Air-King\u2019s<\/a> new look is the dashboard of the BLOODHOUND SSC supersonic vehicle, which was\u00a0fitted with Rolex-made precision instruments.<\/p>\n

Inside the Air-King<\/a>, the Caliber 3131 replaced the 3130. The same movement powers of the Rolex Milgauss<\/a>, thus providing the new Air-King<\/a> with a power reserve of 48 hours and anti-magnetic properties. Its design and features were made for a thoroughly modern Rolex Air-King<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n
