There’s no question – the coronavirus pandemic had a significant impact on all industries, from travel to retail. The watch industry is no exception, with brick and mortar stores closed and big trade fairs like the mighty Baselworld cancelled.<\/p>\n

This doesn’t mean that the industry has shut down, however. In fact, we can say that collectors are still buying watches, and vintage models in particular, are still in demand. The spreading COVID-19 pandemic has shaken stock markets around the world; and in turn, investor’s sentiments. Collectors may be buying vintage watches in order to park their money, while the stock market is volatile.<\/p>\n

Vintage watches – particularly classics like the Rolex Submariner<\/a> and Daytona<\/a>, and vintage Patek Philippe<\/a> and Audemars Piguet pieces – are considered “blue chip” watches, or watches that keep their value well – and may be seen by collectors as a more stable investment vehicle.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n

Since vintage watches are already out of production, the buyer also avoids taking the initial depreciation. Moreover,\u00a0they are inherently scarcer and limited in number. With these two factors considered, vintage watches –\u00a0especially\u00a0unique and specialized models – will always have buyers, particularly when things go back to normal.<\/p>\n

Collectors usually eye a number of different watches at a time or have a list of watches they intend to purchase when the time comes. While many were anticipating the year’s new releases, there are two reasons why they may not be attractive to collectors by the time they’re released.<\/p>\n

Rolex, along with Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Hublot have stopped production for the time being. This means an even longer wait for collectors, who may already opt to get another watch that’s on their list. The pandemic has sure given people more time to pursue hobbies, and it’s no different for watch collectors. Not only is it\u00a0a good time to learn more about horology, it also gives collectors the luxury of\u00a0time to dig through online stores for their desired watch.<\/p>\n
