CARTIER SANTOS

Cartier watches’ history famously began with the creation of the Cartier Santos, the world’s first proper wristwatch, in 1904.

There are several variations of the Cartier Santos, but there are fundamental design traits shared by all — the square case and bezel studded with exposed screws and a simple Cartier dial without a guilloché engraving. A date window has been added to its larger versions.

The modern Santos was introduced in 1978, with the fundamental metal bracelet and exposed screws ; while the Santos 100 model was launched in the 2000s with a more modern look that minimized the screw heads. The Santos made a resurgence this year with a full-on 1980s look.

CARTIER TANK FRANCAISE

Louis Cartier may have designed the first modern wristwatch but his true genius was in creating the classic Cartier Tank. The Art Déco design, inspired by military tanks of World War I, became the dress watch of royalty, leaders, and celebrities.

The Tank Francaise is a relatively young collection in the Tank family, having been launched in 1996 as a sportier version of the classic Tank watch. The chain-link bracelet is reminiscent of the caterpillar tracks of the World War II tanks, a homage to the watch’s beginnings.

Today, it is available in gold, stainless steel and a two-tone steel and gold combination, and comes with options of leather straps.

CARTIER BALLON BLEU

Most of Cartier’s watches come in ladies and men’s versions, and the Ballon Bleu is one that comes with genuine unisex appeal. Introduced in the mid-2000s, it certainly doesn’t have the history of the Tank yet – but its instantly recognizable look makes it one of Cartier’s most popular pieces.

The perfectly round case, from which it takes its name, is accented with a blue sapphire cabochon crown, and enclosed by a loop that forms part of the case. It comes with a clean, guilloche engraved dial, with Roman numerals and perfectly designed proportions.

CARTIER CALIBRE

Cartier has always been known as makers of jewelry and dress watches. In 2010, the brand gained its legitimacy in the sports watch arena with the Cartier Calibre. It wasn’t just its striking design that was very well received, it’s also lauded for the in-house Cartier mechanical movements that power the watch.

Aside from the Calibre, there’s also the Calibre de Cartier Diver and the Calibre de Cartier Chronograph. The robust line shows off Cartier’s watchmaking capabilities with the in-house automatic Caliber 1904 MC, which emphasizes chronometric stability.

CARTIER TANK ANGLAISE

And finally, we have the latest addition to the Cartier Tank family, the Anglaise. An updated version of the classic Cartier Tank, it differs mainly with the thicker, curvilinear case and special crown design.

The curved case is a different direction from the Art Deco roots of the Tank but it makes the design softer and more ergonomic. Launched just in 2012, it has become a favorite of Cartier fans for the design that sits nicely on the wrist.
