Dwayne Johnson’s Panerai Movie Watches

Dwayne Johnson, formerly known as “The Rock” in his professional wrestling days, is now one of the biggest action stars that Hollywood has ever seen. Not only has his movies grossed millions in the box office, he’s also become the highest paid actor in recent years.

Tall, ripped and with a larger than life presence, he’s a favorite lead for action sequels, spin-offs, and franchises. Aside from combat suits and weapons, one accessory has become a staple in his movies – a watch as muscular as his six-foot-five frame.

Were you watching his film and thought you spotted a Panerai? It most certainly was! We went watch-spotting and identified Dwayne The Rock’s Johnson’s Panerai movie watches:

In 2013’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Johnson played Roadblock, the Joes’ heavy weapons specialist. He wore a Panerai Luminor Daylight Chronograph throughout the film.

It’s impossible to discuss the Luminor Daylight without mentioning another action hero – Sylvester Stallone. Stallone, who is credited for bringing the brand to Hollywood, first wore a Panerai in his 1996 movie Daylight. This spawned a collaboration between Panerai and Stallone, including the Daylight series.

Panerai Luminor Daylight Chronograph watches usually come with a tachymeter bezel, so this particular model stands out with its smooth bezel. A rugged brown dial and aged-looking lume give it a retro-cool look.

Luminor Submersible

Johnson first appeared in the Fast and Furious franchise in 2011’s Fast Five. Playing FBI Agent Luke Hobbs, he helped catapult the Fast and Furious into one of the top-grossing movie franchises in history.

In the movie, he wore a 44mm Panerai Luminor Submersible with a titanium case and Clous de Paris hobnail dial. This watch is a real diver’s timepiece that meets the ISO standards, so it’s ready for adventure, whether at sea or on land.

Submersible Titanio

In 2015’s San Andreas, Johnson saves his daughter in the aftermath of a massive earthquake in California. He wore a Panerai Luminor Submersible Titanio.

This watch is massive at 47mm, but with its lightweight titanium case, it can be worn comfortably for hours. Aside from its weight, other advantages of titanium is that it’s hypoallergenic and exhibits excellent corrosion and external shock resistance.

With just a blue seconds subdial hand as accent to its black and white dial, the legibility is spot on, thanks in particular to the use of Super-LumiNova on the markers, hands and graduated scale.

Johnson wears yet another Panerai Luminor Submersible in the 2019 Fast and Furious movie, Hobbs and Shaw. The Submersible is distinguished by a unidirectionally rotating bezel, paired with a cushion case and a Luminor-style crown guard.

It’s clear why the Submersible has become his favorite on set – this line of exceptionally large and robust professional diver’s watches can withstand all the elements it’s exposed to.
