The story of the Tag Heuer Monaco began in 1969, when it was introduced as the first square-cased, water-resistant, automatic chronograph ever made. With its peculiar shape and distinct aura, it became an icon in the world of sports watches.
Today, its appeal has gone beyond the racing track, with watch lovers the world over making it a staple in their collections. The Monaco has become one of the most recognizable watches of all time – it’s simply difficult to miss one when you see it!
We went watch spotting to see which stars love their Tag Heuer Monaco:
Tag Heuer Monaco Gulf
An avid racer, and co-owner of a Porsche customer racing team, Patrick Dempsey might just have the largest collection of Tag Heuer Monaco watches in Hollywood. We’ve spotted the Grey’s Anatomy star with at least 5 models.
His most eye-catching piece is the Monaco Gulf. Released in 2018, it celebrates the first victory of a Gulf car in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. There simply isn’t more iconic livery in the world of motorsport than the bright blue and orange stripes used by Gulf Oil-sponsored teams.
Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 12
Patrick also sports the Monaco Calibre 12, a modern incarnation of the watch famously worn by Steve McQueen in the movie Le Mans. It remains faithful to the racing colors of the original McQueen watch, but added modern touches with the Calibre 12 automatic movement under the hood, a metallic starburst dial and the crown on the right side.
One of Patrick’s prized possessions is a vintage Monaco from 1972. Purchased in Belgium, the retro piece has a black dial and red accents, complemented by a red leather strap. He wears the timepiece anywhere he goes, from the racing circuit to the red carpet. | photo: James Stacey
Tag Heuer Monaco Calibre 11
Chris Hemsworth has been a friend of the brand since 2013. While he’s the face of the Tag Heuer Connected and the Carrera Chronograph series, Chris also has a fondness for the Monaco.
He wears the 2015 Calibre 11 Chronograph, which is considered a faithful re-edition of the 1969 Monaco. It has its crown on the left, a matte blue dial, horizontal hour indices and the vintage Heuer logo. The main differences from the original were the shape of the case and lugs, the push pieces, and the modern movement.
Chris also wears a Monaco Twenty Four Chronograph, which was inspired by cars that compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans race. This model has a distinctive two-part, see through dial and the superlative Calibre 36 visible through the sapphire caseback.
Tag Heuer Monaco Limited Edition
Tom Holland has an extensive collection of watches from Cartier, Patek Philippe, and Piaget. He’s recently caught the Tag Heuer bug, and he could not have made a better choice with the Monaco.
He wears the recently released Monaco Titan Special Edition (pictured below), which is made of Grade 2 titanium. The lightweight material was sandblasted to give the Monaco a sporty, matte finish. The 500-piece limited edition was introduced in time for the 2021 Grand Prix. If you love the monochromatic look but the weight and robustness of steel, the Limited Edition CAW2111B (pictured above) is a great alternative.
Tag Heuer Monaco 24 McQueen
Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has been wearing Tag Heuer watches since 2014. His choice Monaco is the Twenty Four McQueen. The dial takes inspiration from Steve McQueen’s iconic striped race suit in Le Mans, paired with the traditional Monaco template of a blue dial. White and red details take the watch from racing companion to daily wearer.
