Omega has served as the official timekeeper of the Olympics since 1932. 90 years later, the partnership between them continues. Armed with cutting-edge technologies, Omega spearheaded the sports timekeeping duties in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which was delayed due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Japan has always been an important market for the legendary Speedy. As a testament to this, Omega released tons of Speedmaster models in the past exclusively for the Japanese audience.

Home to exceptional tribute pieces, the Speedmaster was chosen again in 2018 for a series of special edition watches that celebrate the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Apart from bearing classic Speedy traits such as a 42mm case size and a sapphire crystal, the Speedmaster Tokyo 2020 watches come in five colors, inspired by the Olympic flag. The majority of their design cues were also based on Japanese culture and milestone Omega watches.

Perhaps the most eye-catching model, the Speedmaster Tokyo 2020 Blue comes in a bold but attractive aesthetic. Crafted in steel, this watch is reminiscent of the 2005 manual-wind Gemini IV Limited Edition.

As its name suggests, the timepiece comes with a blue tachymeter bezel and dial, adorned with a red-tipped seconds hand, contrasting white markers and silver registers, and applied baton indices. This is a good opportunity to own a blue Speedy especially since the Gemini IV is becoming more elusive.

Next, we have the Speedmaster Tokyo 2020 Yellow, which is a reference to the yellow ring of the Olympic flag. Rather than opting for a vibrant look, Omega went for the subtle route for this model with its elegant steel and gold construction.

This edition took the Apollo 15 35th anniversary model’s matte black dial, but with pushers, crown, and bezel made of yellow gold. The counter rings and the sword hands were also given a fancy treatment by boasting yellow gold surrounds.

The Omega Speedmaster Tokyo 2020 Black is a monochromatic approach to the Speedy, with its steel finish and black touches. It represents the black ring of the Olympic flag, but Omega paired it with a silver-colored dial to easily distinguish it from the Speedmaster Professional.

This watch is inspired by two historical Speedys namely the Apollo 11 35th Anniversary and the Mitsukoshi, but with a red Speedmaster logo below 12 o’clock.

The Speedmaster Tokyo 2020 Green represents the gold ring in a soft but striking way. With a dark green tachymeter bezel that adds warmth and luster, it is a Speedmaster unlike any other.

This bi-color model comes in a steel case and bracelet, with pushers, crown, bezel made of Sedna gold — Omega’s version of rose gold alloy. The dark gray dial with a brushed finish also makes the timepiece attractive.

Lastly, we have the Speedmaster Tokyo 2020 Red, which is an ode to the red ring of the Olympic flag. To make the watch more approachable, Omega went for the laid-back route again and opted for a discreet red tachymeter bezel and Speedmaster logo.

Much like the previous versions, this watch has steel construction and a 3-6-9 layout for the chronograph complication. What makes this model unique is the sandblasted muted gray dial, furnished with silver-toned indices and hands.
