Officine Panerai has a very long history with the seas. From its workshop in Florence in the early 20th century, it produced nautical instruments for the Royal Italian Navy. This partnership would eventually lead to the creation of dive watches, namely the Radiomir and the Luminor, two of Panerai’s most popular models today.

Just before the 2000s, Panerai strengthened their dive watch portfolio with the Submersible, a collection of true dive watches with 300-meter depth rating and a rotating bezel that helps control the time of immersion.

Panerai Luminor Marina Specchio Blu

Introduced in 2020, the Specchio Blu is defined by its deep blue sunburst sandwich dial with neon green Super-LumiNova hour markers and hands. The dial features a lot of sheen hence the name Specchio, or mirror in Italian.

Aside from the gorgeous watch face, the Specchio Blu includes a new version of Panerai’s integrated steel bracelet, released in 2017. Robust and lightweight, the new band has thinner links that mirror the silhouette of the Luminor’s iconic crown-protecting device — an element that has been present on the other two generations of bracelets.

Moreover, it comes with a raised semi-circular section on each link, an interchangeability system that allows for easy strap swapping, and an updated double-button deployant clasp that minimizes the watch’s dimensions. Its reinvented form decreases the number of screws required along the bracelet’s sides, resulting in improved ergonomics and fit.

Inside, the Specchio Blu runs on the in-house Calibre P.9010 movement, which offers a three-day power reserve and a frequency rating of 28,800 vibrations per hour (vph). The watch is also resistant to 300 meters thanks to its robust caseback.

Panerai Radiomir GMT Power Reserve

The Radiomir 1940 PAM 946 hails from a collection of Radiomir watches with vignette blue dials. Composed of five timepieces—PAM 932, PAM 933, PAM 934, PAM 945, and PAM 946; all powered by in-house movements—they evoke the oceans with shimmering deep blue shades at the center that turn completely dark at the edges.

This type of gradation is reminiscent of the hues of the sea corresponding to depth as sunlight fades. While the effect seems similar to a smoky, fumé at a glance, the dial treatment on the PAM 946 is actually satiné soleil, or sunray, which exudes a haunting visual appeal.

Rounding out the watch’s interesting dial decor is the caseback design achieved through a metallization process. Despite being fitted with sapphire glass, it manages to conjure the sea through an intricate latticework characterized by swirling, wave-like patterns. A blue rubber strap ties the look together.

Panerai Submersible Blu Notte

The Blu Notte PAM 1068 is a new addition to the Submersible line, having been launched in 2021. Its subaquatic styling is further enhanced with the addition of a midnight blue sunburst dial and unidirectional bezel with a matching ceramic insert.

The blue watch face reflects light with brilliance and energy, responding to every movement, while its legibility is improved by the presence of Super-LumiNova-filled hands, dots, and indices. The leaf-style hand on the small seconds counter lends a bit of playfulness to the already graceful design.

What makes the Blu Notte unique is that it is the first Submersible 42mm reference to feature a steel bracelet. This improved band comes with polished and brushed finishes and center links that resemble Panerai’s recognizable semi-circular crown guard.

Under the hood is the Caliber P.900 – one of the slimmest and most-used movements in the Panerai portfolio. Aside from hacking seconds and automatic and manual winding, this mechanism has a 72-hour power reserve at a beat rate of 28,800 vph.
