Gold Submariners from this era have unique characteristics, just like the ref 16808 pictured here. This watch is classified as “transitional” since it incorporates components from the ref. 1680, such as the vintage “nipple dial” characterized by protruding applied indices, as well as a few updates, such as a quick-set date and the Caliber 3035. If you’re into more modern Rolex Submariners like Chris Hemsworth, go for the newest 41mm edition released in 2020. Despite its slightly bigger case size, many Rolex aficionados agree that the Submariner 41, with its thinner profile and sloping lugs, wears very similarly to its 40mm predecessor.

Ben Haggerty a.k.a Macklemore likes his gold Sub with a little bit more color – he prefers the edition with a blue dial and bezel. This model is part of the new generation range Rolex introduced in 2020, complete with a larger 41mm case and the next-generation cal. 3235 Perpetual movement.

Rolex Submariner White Gold Blue Dial “Smurf”

Gordon Ramsay has shown a great affinity for Rolex. The British chef has a wide range of vintage Submariner and Explorer models in his watch box. He was also spotted with a modern edition of the Rolex Submariner, and his choice is the 18k white gold “Smurf”.

This moniker comes from its beautiful white gold polish, blue dial, and matching blue ceramic bezel, all of which are similar to the imaginary blue cartoon figure. Rolex Submariner White Gold Black Dial “Cookie Monster”

In 2020, the Sub’s case size was increased to 41mm, and a slew of new color and metal combinations were introduced. The solid 18k white gold Submariner originally known as the “Smurf” resurfaced, as did the black dial and green bezel model in Oystersteel known as “Kermit”.

Although the Smurf featured a matching blue dial that immediately conveyed its hefty white gold luxury, the “Cookie Monster” manages to keep a bit more of its tool-watch identity thanks to its comparably austere black display.
