The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony is a collection of dress watches inspired by mid-20th century timepieces. Defined by minimalist dials, stylistic pureness, and slim movements, the Patrimony is a masterclass in restraint and balance – the ultimate in classicism.

Introduced in 2004, the Patrimony takes its cue from 1950s Vacheron Constantin models, as well as the most popular dress watches of the era, such as the Patek Philippe Calatrava. The contemporary edition marries the elegance of the era’s pieces with pared-back minimalism and the remarkable finesse of modern-day movements. From time-only models, the collection has grown to include perpetual calendar and world time models, all while keeping its minimalist approach.

The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony is proof of the Maison’s excellence in aesthetic discretion and mechanical prowess. Explore our collection of Vacheron Constantin Patrimony watches at SwissWatchExpo.com.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY

The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony was introduced in 2004, but its history goes way back.

Businessman François Constantin, and Jacques-Barthélémi Vacheron, grandson to the Maison’s founder, made the Vacheron & Constantin union official in 1819. This collaboration saw the workshop creating hunter-cased watches, minute repeaters, and elegant pocket watches with the slimmest movements of the era. It's a sleight of hand that would prove useful even centuries later.

The Patrimony itself traces its roots in the minimalist dress watches of the 1950s. Featuring circular cases and dials, slender profiles, trim lugs, and minimal dial markers, the focus was on perfect execution of the simplest details.

It’s a style that is also seen in one of the most famous watches of the era – the Patek Philippe Calatrava – but Vacheron mainly dug into its archives. The particular models that inspired the Patrimony are the ref 6187, the “Disco Volante” or Flying Saucer ref 4986 with its machined bezel, and the small-seconds ref 6179.

All three models, while varying in some features, possessed the same minimalist qualities that we see today in the Patrimony range.

The mastery of the modern Vacheron Constantin Patrimony shines even more in the most minute details. On top of the lack of visual clutter and perfect proportions, Vacheron curved the case, dial, and hands ever so subtly, so as to make way for even the most complicated movements, while staying true to the line’s minimalist approach. And while the design may be understated, the mechanical interior is anything but as each detail is lovingly made by hand.

The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony is not only a prime example of Geneva’s fine watchmaking, but to many collectors, it’s the epitome of the simple round watch.

ABOUT THE VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY COLLECTION

The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony, even with its short history, is one of the most popular collections of the brand. Classic, elegant, and harmonious, the Patrimony is loved for its masterful marriage of 20th century dress watch sensibilities, with modern minimalist design and mechanical excellence.

The current collection features 43 models ranging from 36mm to 42.5mm, with everything from time-only models to ultra-thin perpetual calendars and minute repeaters. Here are the main sub-collections under the Patrimony range.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY MANUAL WINDING

Featuring only central hour and minute hands, these models focus on exquisite hand-finishing and pure elegance. Inside is a Calibre 1400 classic movement which is abundantly reliable and precise. Available in 36 and 40mm sizes, in 18k yellow, rose, and white gold.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY SELF WINDING

While it keeps the same design as the manual winding model, self-winding versions of the Patrimony come with seconds hands as well as a sapphire case back to display the sophisticated design of its movement. Its caliber has an elevated oscillating weight in 22K gold inspired by the Maltese cross. Available in 40mm sizes, in 18k yellow, rose, and white gold.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY PERPETUAL CALENDAR

Powered by the in-house 1120 QP calibre, the Patrimony Perpetual Calendar displays a lot of information in a harmonious dial. The moon phase is shown at 6 o’clock, the perpetual calendar with day of the week at 9 o’clock, date in a window at 3 o’clock, and finally, the month and leap year on 48-month counters at 12 o’clock. It will adjust to the calendar until March 1st 2100. Available in 41mm sizes, in 18k rose gold and platinum.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY RETROGRADE DAY-DATE

The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Retrograde Day-Date features a unique aesthetic with its dual retrograde display for the day of the week and date. The hour markers and hands follow the gentle curve of the dial, and go back to their original position after every Sunday or 31st of the month. Available in 42.5mm sizes, in 18k rose gold and white gold.

VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY TRADITIONELLE WORLD TIME

The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Traditionnelle World Time takes the complication to the next level. Instead of the usual 24 time zones, it displays 37, to account for those with a half or quarter-hour difference. It also includes a day-night indicator. Available in 42.5mm sizes, in 18k rose gold and in a limited edition platinum version.

COMMON QUESTIONS ABOUT VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY

Inspired by mid-50th century watches, the Vacheron Constantin Patrimony collection is comprised of dress watches with clean designs, capturing the essence of watchmaking in its purest form. Here are the most commonly asked questions about the Patrimony collection.

WHAT IS A VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY WATCH?

The Patrimony is a collection of dress watches introduced in 2004. Inspired by the brand’s mid-20th century watches, this range is characterized by simple round cases, thin profiles, and restrained dial design. The current collection consists of two- or three-hand watches, minute repeaters, perpetual calendars, and tourbillons, where even the most complicated pieces have clean designs.

HOW CAN I TELL IF A VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY IS AUTHENTIC?

Vacheron Constantin is the oldest manufacturer of fine watches. Belonging to the “Holy Trinity” of watchmakers, who are considered supreme in craftsmanship and design, their timepieces are made to perfection.

If you spot a mistake or any sign of unfinished work on a Vacheron Constantin timepiece, then it is likely a fake.

The best way to verify the authenticity of a Vacheron Constantin watch is to go to an authorized dealer to have your timepiece checked. We always advise clients to buy only from a reputable watch retailer, like SwissWatchExpo, who can provide a guarantee of authenticity on the watch.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO SERVICE MY VACHERON CONSTANTIN PATRIMONY WATCH?

In general, Vacheron Constantin recommends these maintenance periods for their watches:

  • Every 3 to 4 years for a complicated watch.
  • Every 4 to 5 years for a watch with a mechanical movement (automatic or manual).
  • Every 6 to 7 years for a quartz watch.

However, your watch’s condition still depends on how often you wear and how you store your watch.

There are a few tell tale signs that your watch needs maintenance sooner rather than later. Check out our guide on Signs It’s Time for Watch Maintenance.
